Area Carpets: What’s The Best Size for Your Space?
After enjoying many wonderful years with your carpet of choice underfoot, there comes a time when it is the right moment to upgrade, and thus, you start your search for options. While there is a bountiful assortment of options, to say the least, and even more so with the Internet at your fingertips, making a choice can be overwhelming. Among the points to consider are emphasis on designs, patterns, fiber, size, and origin, as well as personal taste and the compatibility with the area where it’s going.
The size of the carpet matters. In fact, it is tantamount to the selection process. The wrong size can make or break it, irrespective of how hard you have tried to find the best color and design for your home.
Area carpets play a crucial role in creating a cohesive look within a space. They are not just meant for practical uses, but also aesthetic appeal. However, the desired effect is achieved only when you have them in the right size. Choosing a carpet that is the right size also should take into account the method in which they are sized. For example, some carpets are woven according to metric dimensions, whereas others are made in accordance with Imperial sizes (i.e. feet). A conversion is almost always available, but is approximate so make sure to keep this small bit of information in mind. Additionally, while carpets do have sizes, they are often not exact measurements, so allow for a couple of inches of wiggle room.
For the size guide, you can use these tips as a guide in sizing out any contenders:
· Use furniture placement as the metric
The carpet should extend at least eight inches beyond each side of the furniture (whether large or small). So,measure and choose accordingly. Laying it out, either the furniture can be placed on the carpet in its entirety or just the front legs to anchor both these elements in the space.
·
Avoid too small
If you find the carpet or rug to be too small for your space, avoid it completely.
Not sure about the size? Follow
these simple rules:
· Consider the room and placement as well as settings and any spacing.
For dining room: When placed under the dining table, the carpet should be large enough to extend three feet from the edges of the table, so as to allow chairs to scoot in and out without coming off the carpet. Additionally, the shape of the table plays a role in the shape of the carpet, which also affects the size. For instance, round tables should have a round rug, rectangular tables should have a rectangular carpet, etc.
Living room: If furniture is floating (or not placed against the wall), the carpet should extend at least inches from all sides. If the furniture is placed against the wall, the rug should be one foot underneath.
For bedroom: It depends on the size of rug you desire. Some people want a small area rug so that their feet don’t touch the floor when getting out of bed. Others want a full carpet encompassing both sides of the bed. In this case, it is better if the carpet extends far enough out in front of the bed, at least 3 feet. As for the nightstand, whether on or off is a matter of choice, but keep it in mind when sizing the rug.
Runners are a solid option for hallway rugs – however, consider the length, use, and aesthetics of the corridor to know how long of a runner this space would need.
